Kaniungan Besar lies off the coast of Biduk-Biduk in Berau Regency.
Unlike some of Berau's smaller uninhabited islands, Kaniungan Besar is home to a local fishing community.
Official Berau documents distinguish two islands in the area: Kaniungan Besar and Kaniungan Kecil, with the larger island located closer to the mainland and inhabited by local residents.
